The SAG actor strike is still ongoing but there are a handful of movie projects that have been given the green light to commence filming with the thought that movie theaters will still have new product to show if the strike lasts longer forcing new releases to dry up. How they pick which ones get made or not is anyone’s guess but we have one interesting film that is going full steam ahead and it stars Jason Momoa, Oscar Isaac and Gerard Butler headlining.
The movie is called In The Hand of Dante and it’s a unique and off kilter sounding crime thriller from director Julian Schnabel. The upcoming movie is based on the novel which has the same name which was penned by Nick Tosches, and it centers on a legendary piece of history which finds its way into the hands of criminals.
According to Deadline which broke the exclusive the plot reads: “In the Hand of Dante revolves around when the original manuscript of the Divine Comedy emerges in the clutches of a black-market smuggling ring in the dangerous underbelly of New York City, weary scholar Nick is called by the mob to authenticate it.
Overwhelmed by temptation, Nick defies the mafia and steals the manuscript in a frenzied bid to have it all. He follows a dark and violent path from a metaphorical Hell into Paradise with his love Giulietta, while a parallel tale unfolds: the odyssey of Dante himself, a man who — trapped in a loveless marriage with Gemma and bolstered only by his mentorship under an austere intellectual — escapes to Sicily and creates his greatest work, immortalizing his lost love, Beatrice.
Nick and Dante’s timelines weave separate paths and yet the two men are inextricably linked — both lose themselves chasing love, beauty, and the very promise of the divine.”
An interesting project to say the least. Even with the star power, I really don’t see this giving cinemas cash so I question exactly what projects SAG is green lighting. I would think that they would give the go to more safer films but hey I’m not in charge.
Schnabel (Before the Night Falls, At Eternity’s Gate, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) is helming the film from a script he also wrote which is based on Tosches’ novel. Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus, The Last Kiss, The Passion of the Christ) and Fortunado Cerlino (Inferno, Medici, Gomorrah) lead out the additional cast.
I’m intrigued by this movie and will be waiting patiently to see footage from it and how the three stars, who are no stranger to action fare, are utilized in it. Lock N Load right here for any future Intel to drop on this one as it’s currently in production.
