Full disclosure…I was never a fan of any of the original Toxic Avenger movies as they were way too off the wall and just not funny in my eyes. My apologies. Because if that, I’m intrigued to check out the remake of the film with star Peter Dinklage taking over as the gruesome avenger who seeks to do damage and a lot of it to those who wronged him.
The film made a glorious debut as last week’s Fantastic Fest, although there were no screeners for those of us who couldn’t be in Austin, Texas to view it so alas I’ll have to wait to curb my curiosity. I’m the meantime, check out the bloody teaser below but be warned…you won’t really see Toxie as they are keeping his appearance close to the vest.
Official Synopsis: Winston Gooze, a stereotypical weakling who works as a janitor at Garb-X health club and is diagnosed with a terminal illness that can only be cured by an expensive treatment that his greedy, power hungry employer refuses to pay for. After deciding to take matters into his own hands and rob his company, Winston falls into a pit of toxic waste and is transformed into a deformed monster that sets out to do good and get back at all the people who have wronged him.
Starring along with Dinklage is an A cast including Taylour Paige (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Kevin Bacon (X-Men: First Class), Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings films), Julia Davis (Camping), Jonny Coyne (Beirut), Sarah Niles (Ted Lasso), David Yow (Under the Silver Lake), and Jane Levy (Evil Dead).
The film was written and helmed by acclaimed filmmaker Macon Blair (Green Room). It was produced by the original film’s directing team of Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz for Troma Entertainment.
The budget definitely looks bigger than the original but it looks yo keep the style and tone of it. It’s certainly going to be a bloodbath as the red band trailer promises so genre fans will most likely gravitate towards this one.
After it’s initial world premiere at the 2023 Fantastic Fest last week, it his accumulated a robust 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after the first wave of reviews so that does bode well.
Lock N Load for more Intel to come!
