The 90’s was so long ago that it goes without saying that some actors were more popular and headlining films to which today, they are mostly forgotten about. Mario Van Peebles hasn’t been forgotten about by Jo stretch of the imagination but it does go with saying that he was an action star in the 90’s starring in a host of action flicks like Solo and Gunmen and one of his most iconic ones in the crime-thriller New Jack City.
Peebles also is a filmmaker having helmed many projects and one of them was his dive into the western genre with 1993’s Posse which was a homage to the blaxploitation films his father Melvin Van Peebles did. The film was an eclectic affair that blended the western genre with racial tones of the times and it also features massive shoot outs.
Well, Mario is returning to the West once again for his latest venture titled Outlaw Posse. I know what you’re thinking. Is it a follow up to the 1993 film? Actually it doesn’t connect at all but it still sounds cool and it boasts a sensational cast including Whoopi Goldberg, Edward James Olmos and Cedric the Entertainer. Check out the synopsis below along with a new image revealed by Variety today!

Outlaw Posse” is set in the Wild West of 1908, where men in power take advantage of an unfair world where corruption and greed run deep. Renegade cowboy Chief (Mario Van Peebles), eager to restore balance, assembles a daring group of outcasts and saddles up on a cross-country odyssey to reclaim stolen gold in unsettled territory. Pursued by the vengeful lawman Angel (Mapother), the posse is caught in a deadly game of survival and redemption, navigating the treacherous terrain of gunfights, showdowns, and horse chases. United by honor, they encounter allies such as Stagecoach Mary (Goldberg) that shape their destiny. As they venture closer to the hidden treasure, they soon learn survival is the only justice.
Additional cast members include William Mapother, John Carroll Lynch (Fargo, The Founder), D.C. Young Fly (House Party), Jake Manly (Midway, Mandela Van Peebles (Jigsaw), Amber Reign Smith (Wu-Tang: An American Saga), William McDonough, the always reliable Neal McDonough (Minority Report, Captain America: The First Avenger).
Van Peebles wore many hats on this one as he stars in as well as wrote and directed the western thriller. Highland Film Group is selling the film to potential buyers but with this cast and Peebles in charge, it’ll get picked up in no time.
I am a fan of Peebles and enjoyed his action output during the 90’s with the action-horror film Full Eclipse being one of my favorites. I’m excited to see him return in action and will be waiting anxiously for this one to drop as a good western is hard to beat.
