The sequel to 2019’s hit Japanese period epic Kingdom was a rousing success and now director Shinsuke SATŌ is back with another rousing installment that promises heavy handed period drama coupled with blistering battle action that is unrivaled. The sequel, titled Kingdom II is ready for a summer domestic launch in Japan so check out the newest tease and key art below!

Adapted from a manga of the same name, Kingdom follows the story of a war orphan Shin (Kento Yamazaki), who aspires to escape his status as a slave and become a great general. The story is also based on the life of Li Xin, a general of Qin during the Warring States period of ancient China.

The full title is Kingdom II: Harukanaru Daichi e which translates to To Distant Lands and the sequel sees the first film’s stars Kento Yamazaki, Ryō Yoshizawa, and Kanna Hashimoto all returning for more bloody sword filled action set pieces.

Filming the sequel was quite the endeavor as the pandemic made things difficult. Principal photography was handled in stages thus delaying the finished product. Shooting tool place both in Japan and China and started in June of 2020 but wasn’t completed until over a year later in October of 2021.

The first film made its way to this side of the pond so hopefully the follow up will as well. The fight and stunt choreography is a solid example that Asian Action Cinema is still top tier when it comes to this type of filmmaking.
