Michael Mann Returns to Television with HBOMAX’s Japanese Crime-Thriller TOKYO VICE!

By: John M Jerva

Prolific filmmaker and television series creator Michael Mann is headed back to the small screen with a new dark and brutal crime-thriller titled Tokyo Vice. The stage is set for a throwback style underworld thrill ride starring Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe. Check out the new key art and brushing new trailer below!

Loosely inspired by American journalist Jake Adelstein’s non-fiction first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat, the crime drama series, filmed on location in Tokyo, captures Adelstein’s (played by Ansel Elgort) daily descent into the neon-soaked underbelly of Tokyo in the late ‘90s, where nothing and no one is truly what or who they seem.

Tokyo Vice also features Academy Award nominee Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Ella Rumpf, Hideaki Ito, Show Kasamatsu, and Tomoshisa Yamashita to round out the cast.

The look and feel of this project from the initial teaser above screams 80’s soaked crime drama in the vein of Mann’s iconic Miami Vice (it’s probably no coincidence that Vice is in the title here as well) so fans of this subgenre will definitely be putting this one on the top of their lists.

Tokyo Vice will hit HBOMAX starting April 7th with three premier episodes followed by two episodes every week leading up to the blood soaked finale on April 28th.
