Just the other day, action icon Jean-Claude Van Damme posted a cryptic picture of an image of himself doing the splits on top of the official Netflix logo and while I was intrigued, I decided to wait and post until we had further info on the project.
Now the time has come as The Hollywood Reporter is bringing word that JCVD is enlisting for a film called The Last Mercenary. It’s an action-comedy which will see The Muscles from Brussels play an ex-secret service agent who must break into action to save his son.
Per THR: In the French-language film, written by Charhon and Ismael Sy Savane (“Lascars”), Van Damme plays a mysterious former secret service agent who must urgently return to France when his estranged son is falsely accused of arms and drug trafficking by the government, following a blunder by an overzealous bureaucrat and a mafia operation.
“The Last Mercenary is an incredibly exciting project and allows me to take on a new genre,” said Van Damme. “I’ve always been a fan of Jean-Paul Belmondo and I hope to take up the torch of action comedy in my own way. David Charhon’s script brings all these elements together in a very successful way – a beautiful story with emotion, a lot of action and a lot of humour.”
Added the action star: “I’m also very happy to work alongside a new generation of talent such as Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla and Samir Decazza, but also to be reunited on screen with the creme de la creme of French actors such as Patrick Timsit, Eric Judor, Miou-Miou and Valérie Kaprisky.”
“I want to return to the great tradition of action films of the ’80s and ’90s — those cult films we all love where the heroes were out of the ordinary, the stunts were all more impressive and truer than life, and all punctuated with humour. Only Jean-Claude could embody this unparalleled golden age of cinema,” said Charhon.
Helmed by David Charhon, JC is set to star alongside Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla, Samir Decazza, Patrick Timsit, Eric Judor and Miou-Miou. Netflix has really been stepping up to the plate with new action offerings since the lockdown and knowing we will have a new Van Damme project in the future certainly gives us something to look forward to.
Van Damme has certainly been hit or miss as of late but I’m still a fan and have enjoyed his offerings worts and all. He is still an action legend and even though he looks like he’s gonna pass out at times, he still manages to excite the masses. Hopefully this film will see him break out some skills as fans want to see what he can still do.
Keep it locked and loaded right here for more on The Last Mercenary as we are your destination for everything action!!!
