Update: Just after I posted the news about the release date, I found a new teaser trailer courtesy of the film’s Instagram page showing off Michael Jai White’s badass moves! Check it out below and get ready for September because the clock is ticking! The post also says that’ll be available on DVD and Digital on the same date!
(Original Post) Well it looks like first reports of a June release were slightly exaggerated as Netflix had just announced that the direct to streaming reboot Welcome to Sudden Death will now make its debut in September instead. We have a little longer wait but at least it’s another new action title for us to sink our teeth into as theaters stay closed and 99% of all theatrical release gave been bumped to 2021.
Starring action legend Michael Jai White, Welcome to Sudden Death is a remake in name only to JCVD’s 90’s Action-thriller which was basically Die Hard in a sports arena.
WELCOME TO SUDDEN DEATH is a reboot of the original 1995 SUDDEN DEATH directed by Peter Hyams and starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, now presented with a comedic twist. The new film will star actor and comedian Gary Owen and trained martial artist Michael Jai White, who’s diverse and ground-breaking credits include BLACK DYNAMITE, SPAWN, and most recently the American action flicks TRIPLE THREAT and A HARD WAY, as well as a recurring role on CW’s hit Arrow.
The film is helmed by Dallas Jackson who also penned the script and the filmmaker described it as the “martial arts version of Die Hard.” Throw in martial arts ace Marrese Crump, who took on Tony Jaa in The Protector 2, and we hopefully have the makings of a solid action flick to curb your appetite while staying home for lord knows how long. All I have to say is that White and Crump better go toe to toe with epic results.
While filming commenced last year, Dallas Jackson stated: “I’m such a huge fan of martial-arts films I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to reboot this cult classic with Universal 1440,” says Jackson. “Michael Jai White and Gary Owen are both at the top of their game right now and an on-screen dream team. We’re having a blast making this movie and putting a twist on the buddy-action genre. I can’t wait for the world to see what we’re cooking!”
Jackson also made the comment that this film is a remake of Van Damme’s original film and that it will have a comedic twist to it to go along with the intense action sequences.
Starring along with White and Crump are Gary Owen (Ride Along), Gillian White (Never Back Down: No Surrender) and Kristen Harris (Channel Zero).
Hopefully, we get a trailer and poster soon and with White in the starring role, I feel this film is in good hands and I welcome the comedic twist as White has proven time and time again that he can drop the one liners with the best of them.
Welcome to Sudden Death will stream exclusively on Netflix beginning on September 29th so get ready for more punishment Michael Jai White style coming your way!
