Well this didn’t take long. After just a few weeks in release and much speculation being thrown around, Deadline is reporting that a follow up to Netflix’s hit Actioner Extraction has been officially green lit by the streaming service. Action fans may rejoice now.
Per Deadline: “Joe Russo has closed a deal to write another installment of the high action film. AGBO, the company run by Russo and his brother Anthony, are putting the pieces together and are optimistic that Sam Hargrave returns as director, and that Chris Hemsworth will reprise as mercenary Tyler Rake, though those deals won’t be made by Netflix until the script is ready.”
The news really comes as no surprise as the action-thriller has taken over the top spot on Netflix as the most watched film ever.
Joe Russo commented on the status of the follow up saying that his deal is closed. “The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be,” Russo told Deadline. “We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.”
Russo is, of course, mentioning the ambiguous ending where it is not exactly clear if Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake survived the ordeal and the question remains if the second film will be a direct sequel or a prequel exploring Rake’s earlier days.
Russo also mentioned that he firmly expects director Sam Hargrave to return to helm once again and even though it is early and there is no official confirmation, Hemsworth will probably return to the role as he posted earlier this week that he would be stoked to revisit the character.
Russo said the focus at this point is to get the story done and then present it to Hemsworth afterwords. He’ll most likely be on board given that his schedule will warrant it.
Extraction has taken the world by storm and has become a massive hit especially with no theatrical films hitting at the moment. I was one of the many that loved the film and heralded as a action cinema master class with unbelievable action set pieces. Hargrave has made an astounding directorial debut and Hemsworth has cemented his action hero status with this one.
Keep it locked and loaded right here for more on the future and get ready for the return of Tyler Rake!
