October can’t come fast enough and hopefully theaters will be running again and Snake-Eyes: GI Joe Origins will be unleashed upon us with all its epic ninja greatness. The film finished production in late February just in time before the pandemic hit so we should be able to see the film on time.
With that in mind, The Hollywood Reporter has made this JOE fan very happy as they are reporting that Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are officially moving forward on a follow up GI Joe flick that will reportedly build off the Snake-Eyes solo adventure. No word as of yet whether this the Ever Vigilant film that has been discussed in the past.
Paramount is actively negotiating with Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse to pen the script. The team are best known for writing the feature film Seberg which stars Kristen Stewart and while the planned movie is not quite a sequel to Snake-Eyes, it will expand on the universe and hopefully will include Golding and company in its plans.
Unfortunately this project is in the very early stages so any plot details are being held hostage by Cobra Commander at this point. THR does state that “the idea for the project is to build on Snake Eyes, making it not quite a sequel but rather an expansion to take audience goers deeper into the world of Joe.”
Snake-Eyes: GI Joe Origins stars Henry Golding of Crazy Rich Asians fame and will center on the popular and mysterious Ninja Commando who is a valuable member of the Joes. The film also stars Andre Koji (Warrior) as Storm Shadow who is a rival ninja, action sensation Iko Uwais (Triple Threat) as the sword master The Hard Master who will train Snake in the ways of the clan, Samara Weaving (Ready Or Not) as Scarlett who is one of the only trusted confidants in Snake’s life, and Úrsula Corberó (Money Heist) as the villainess Cobra agent The Baroness. The story is said to serve as an origin story and follow Snake-Eyes as he seeks vengeance for the murder of his father and his acceptance into the Arashakage clan. The movie is still on track to debut on October 23nd of this year.
Paramount and Hasbro have, of course, released two prior Joe films with 2009’s GI JOE: The Rise Of Cobra starring Channing Tatum and Dennis Quad and the follow up soft reboot GI JOE: RETALIATION featuring the return of Tatum and the addition of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Paramount had been trying to launch a third film with The Rock but to no such luck. Even though both films saw very good success at the box office, the company is now going into reboot mode with the Snake-Eyes solo outing serving as the start for what is to come.
Shrapnel and Waterhouse are no strangers to the GI Joe franchise as word comes down that they did “uncredited production polishing” on Snake-Eyes which probably led to them receiving the writing gig for a Joe ensemble film. When more 411 comes down on the project, you can bet you will see it here so keep it locked and loaded here as we are your source for everything action and GI Joe!
While we wait for more, check out the awesome battle between Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow from the animated hit GI JOE: Resolute!
