The long gestating The Raid remake from director Joe Carnahan and Frank Grillo via their War Party production banner has taken another path to becoming a reality. The remake which would have starred Grillo is now set to become an original film and will no longer be a remake of the classic Indonesian action flick which introduced many audiences to the awesomeness that is Iko Uwais.

The news comes by way of Carnahan himself in an interview he did with Collider and the film will now be an original incarnation titled ZENO. The reason behind the change is that Carnahan has since parted ways with XYZ Films who holds the rights to The Raid. The good news is that Carnahan’s script is his and that’s the film he intends to make.

Frank Grillo is still attached to star in the film which will center on two brothers at odds with each other just like The Raid. The film’s name Zeno derives from the main character.

In the interview with Collider, Carnahan talked about Grillo’s character:

“You meet Frank’s character having just rotated back from a really, really, brutal special forces operation. He’s got soft tissue damage in his hands, and his rotator cuff is blown out, and they take fluid off his knees, and the doctors basically tell him, “Listen you’re at the razor’s edge of PTSD and you need three months of just nothing, some R&R, because you’re jacked up.’ And in that space he gets the message that his brother, who he thought had been dead for four years, is actually alive and working for a very bad guy in Caracas, and in 18 hours they’re gonna kill his brother. These forces are gonna descend and murder the bad guy and murder the brother, so do you wanna go and get your brother, who you thought is dead? Do you want that opportunity? So that’s where we start.”

Carnahan also stated that he wants the entire movie to be like the intense scene between Adam Goldberg and the German in Saving Private Ryan which I don’t think I would’ve able to handle as that one scene was traumatic enough.

“I want the entire movie to feel like the knife fight between Adam Goldberg and the German in Saving Private Ryan. Everything. In every great action film there’s always an emotional quotient that you’re dealing with,” Carnahan said. “You have to have a sense of stakes. For all of the tremendous excess of those last two Matrix films, which I enjoyed the hell out of, they never really got to the tension of just Keanu Reeves trying to answer a phone at the end of the first movie. There was great pathos, there was a great sense of, ‘Is he gonna make it?’ The spectacle I think outweighs the heart and soul of it, and that’s what you have to remember is you’ve gotta have that attached.”

This film sounds epic and I love Frank Grillo in these types of roles so I know he’ll knock it out of the park. Also, it’s probably better that it’s an original film and not a remake as this project received a lot of heat for trying to redo a classic. The synopsis for Zeno sounds truly grand and the action should be off the hook.

The duo of Carnahan and Grillo also have the equally kick ass looking Boss Level hitting this year with Grillo starring along with Mel Gibson so that should be a nice prerequisite to Zeno.

Hopefully the film gets moving soon and you know we’ll have all the updates for you so keep it locked and loaded right here!
