2014’s Edge of Tomorrow which was renamed Live, Die, Repeat when it hit home video was a massive hit with genre fans when it was initially released and while it wasn’t exactly a massive money maker, fans have been wanting a sequel for some time. I actually wrote a piece about a potential follow up on my older site but alas nothing has materialized as of yet.
That may hopefully change as director Doug Liman, who helmed the original, has brought up a potential production start for the film although it may still take a while.
The film, of course, starred mega superstar Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt and the main synopsis read: The film takes place in a future where most of Europe is invaded by an alien race. Major William Cage (Cruise), a public relations officer with no combat experience, is forced by his superiors to join a landing operation against the aliens. Though Cage is killed in combat, he finds himself in a time loop that sends him back to the day preceding the battle every time he dies, with some memory of events. Cage teams up with Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt) to improve his fighting skills through the repeated days, while looking for a way to defeat the extraterrestrial invaders.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Liman talked about the delayed sequel and reinforced the fact that he very much wants to make it happen and hopes to do it after Cruise wraps up with both Mission: Impossible 7 and 8. “I’m hoping. If we’re going to do it, that would be the time,” Liman was quoted as saying. Liman even confirmed that the script was ready.
Things are not set in stone however as Cruise and Blunt are extremely busy and in high demand but Liman’s comments do shed some positivity on the subject. Fans will surely wait as long as it takes for a sequel and the first film was locked and loaded with spectacular special effects and action set pieces with Cruise and Blunt sharing great on screen chemistry. I was able to see it on opening weekend back then and always revisit it on occasion.
While we wait for some more news on the sequel, check out the pulse pounding action from the first movie with Cruise in top form!
