Ever since Paramount Pictures unveiled the 2009 G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, the film was met with harsh criticism from critics and die hard fans alike. The original film was a casualty of a writer’e strike and production was rushed without a really developed script. Things improved back in 2013 when the sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation was released and it featured Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Roadblock. While that film was better received, we have been waiting for word on a potential third film for a while now.

Rumors began to circulate that Paramount and Hasbro were looking at developing a spin-off film that would focus mainly on the Joe’s Ninja Commando Snake Eyes. The film was said to be an origin story and unfortunately actor and martial artist Ray Park who played Snake in the two films would not reprise his role. Since the announcement, things have been Snake Eyes silent to say the least.

Now word comes from Hollywoodnorth.buzz that movement has ramped up and a fall production start is aimed for in Vancouver. No other word or casting news has been revealed at this time although Paramount has pushed the initial release date of May 27th, 2020 to October 16th, 2020 so it appears that they want to take their time with this one.

Snake Eyes is one of the most popular characters in the G.I. Joe cannon and it makes sense to tailor the third outing to him and his story. Snake was more of a supporting player in the first film but he was given a lot more to do in Retaliation including a 10 minute action sequence where there was no dialogue which was an homage to one of the issues of the comic book.

The original film The Rise Of Cobra starred Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Sienna Miller, Dennis Quaid, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Rachel Nichols and made a worldwide total of $302 million. The 2013 sequel featured The Rock as well as  Bruce Willis, Adrianne Palicki, and Ray Stevenson with Tatum only appearing in the movie briefly. That film garnered $375 million at the worldwide boxx office. The Rock was supposed to enlist for the third potential film at one time before the spin-off was created but it never materialized.

I, for one, am a huge JOE geek and even more of a Snake Eyes fan so I can’t wait to see what transpires with this project and who will coveted the role. Keep it locked and loaded right here for more to come on SNAKE EYES!

In the meantime, check out Ray Park in action as Snake Eyes from GI JOE: RETALIATION!!!
