The Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson tentpole action-thriller Red Notice has been gestating for quite sometime after Universal locked up the film last year and no info has dropped since then but that has all changed as the film, in a surprising turn of events, has switched distributors and has added some immense star power to accompany Johnson for a 2020 start date.

Deadline brought down the exclusive hammer Monday when it was announced that Netflix has now picked up the thriller and that Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds, woulod be joing The Rock and Gal Gadot for what is arguably Netflix’s biggest project to date. Johnson and Gadot also worked together on the Fast And Furious franchise.

Red Notice is is being hailed as a “globetrotting action heist thriller” where Netflix was runner up to Universal in a bidding war but it seems the tides have changed and the giant streaming service just padded its site with some serious star firepower. Johnson and Gadot were attached when Universal was still in the driver’s seat but now Reynolds has been added to bulk up the enticing project.

Red Notice reunites Johnson with his Skyscraper and Central Intelligence director Rawson Marshall Thurber. The director and writer pitched his screenplay with a budget, the filmmakers sensed that Universal was ngetting cold feet which led to the window opening for Netflix to swoop in and claim it for their own.

Johnson made a recent statement on the switch and of Netflix’s commitment to the project and said:

“I admire the ambition of Netflix to become one of the biggest movie studios in the world,” Johnson said. “Their original content generates critical acclaim and invites full collaboration on every level of production. Their unbridled enthusiasm for Red Notice is equally matched by their commitment to entertaining audiences on an international scale.

“As the landscape of movies, distribution and audience consumption continues to evolve, our Seven Bucks focus is to continue to find the best platform and partners to thrive in this ever changing environment. Director/writer Rawson Thurber has delivered a dynamic script that me and my co-stars and partners-in-heist, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds, can’t wait to shoot.

“The fun we’re gonna have making Red Notice, but more importantly — the fun the worldwide audience will have watching it in 190+ countries — all at the same moment.”

This move is sure surprising after a report was released last week that said the streaming giant was curtailing its high budget films after Triple Frontier didn’t perform as well as they liked. Now with this news of acquiring Red Notice it seems that Netflix is all systems go to become one of the largets film production companies around.

Red Notice is without a doubt one of the most anticiapted films now and it sure will be interesting to see how it comes out. We have a wait though as production isn’t set until next yearso we can speculate all we want until then but there’s no denying that this trinity os stars will certainly bring it home in terms of entertainment factor. Keep it locked and loaded right here for more to come!
