With the Paramount Plus series Lioness starting its third season, we all know that filmmaker and television wizard Taylor Sheridan can handle special forces action and not only handle it but infuse it with weighty characters and real emotional depth at the same time for a real immersive experience. Sheridan pretty much can do anything he wants nowadays but its rightly deserved and now he’s setting his eyes on more special ops action with his new theatrical actioner F.A.S.T.
Warner Bros. is issuing a summer 2027 release launch for the film which sees Sheridan working the script and Ben Richardson, who helmed multiple episodes of Sheridan’s 1923, directing. The film was actually supposed to hit in April of next year, but the studio is pushing it a month later to May 14, 2027.
F.A.S.T. features a solid cast including Brandon Sklenar (1923), LaKeith Stanfield (Play Dirty), Jason Clarke (The Last Frontier), Sam Claflin (The Count of Monte Cristo), and Trevante Rhodes (The Predator). Sklenar has also been tagged in rumors as one of the leading candidates to play The Dark Knight in James Gunn’s DCU.
On paper, the film’s plot would seem like standard action cinema tropes, but it doesn’t matter as it is right up my alley and I’m all-over special ops bad asses decimating vile drug dealers preying on an American town. The full synopsis reads, “a former special forces commando, down on his luck after he returns Stateside, who is tapped by the DEA to lead a black op strike team against CIA-protected drug dealers in his town.”
Sklenar certainly has the action hero looks and his acting chops have been resident while working on Sheridan’s 1923 as well as feature films, so it’ll be interesting to see how he handles full throttle elite warrior action onscreen.
It’s important to note that Sheridan had written this film all the way back circa 2010 with the prospect of him directing but at the time, the project was deemed too expensive for theatrical or streaming. Given Sheridan’s all-star status nowadays, Warner Bros. was more than happy to pony up and make sure this film sees the light of day. Wise choice WB and I will be there in the theater to see it.
With Sheridan tapped to do the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare film with Peter Berg for Paramount, many will see F.A.S.T. as sort of a pre-cursor to what Sheridan will do with that live action video game adaptation. I feel that with Sheridan’s track record and every winner he has put out on television, I think it’ll do the job for fans of the genre.
