I would like to say that I am extremely excited to see the buddy action subgenre making a rousing comeback in recent years. The trope, which usually pits two mismatched men on a mission gone extremely awry with comedic and bombastic results, seemed to have died out after the 80’s and 90’s, but now there is a resurgence. A welcome resurgence at that.
Apple Studios has just rolled out a new trailer for the throwback buddy action-comedy Mayday which pairs Ryan Reynolds with Kenneth Branagh. Mass hijinks and chaos ensue when Reynold’s hot shot pilot gets caught behind Russian lines and his only hope for survival is a rather rustic Russian fellow who has seen way too many 80’s American television. this one looks knee slapping hilarious so scroll below for the official first look!
When hot shot U.S. Navy pilot Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly (Reynolds) is sent on a top-secret mission into Russian territory at the height of the Cold War, the operation implodes, leaving him stranded behind enemy lines. Discovered by Nikolai Ustinov (Branagh), a gruff ex-KGB agent with a penchant for American culture, Troy thinks he’s toast – but could an unlikely alliance between the two lead to Troy’s rescue, and a bond neither saw coming?
TRAILER TACTICAL REACTION: Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Date Night) look to keep their successful track record intact with their latest film that looks like it was ripped right from the 80’s. Reynolds and Branagh look flawless together and I had Midnight Run vibes all through the trailer. From Neil Diamond’s We Come into America playing throughout to Branagh whispering heavily in Reynold’s ear, this movie looks to be throwback action buddy fun with moments that made me laugh at loud. They say that Reynolds is like Jason Statham in that he plays the same type of role in all his movies (not true by the way) but I say what the hell is wrong with that?! If it ain’t broke don’t fix it and Reynolds has honed his craft through out the years and serves up a master class in comedy laced with action. Branagh, who is also a prolific filmmaker in his own right, returns to acting and he is a welcome sight and looks to be having tons of fun here with the material. I haven’t seen the movie yet and I already want a sequel with these two playing the ultimate odd couple.
