Action and martial arts sensation Iko Uwais has made quite the name for himself playing characters with integrity and honor while deploying his sick Silat skills on screen. Uwais has even developed his own production banner to bring the kinds of action films that he wants to see to the masses with his first effort Timur garnering great reviews from his fanbase.
For his latest endeavor, Uwais is making a change after a few heoric roles lately and is embracing his dark side and going full on rogue for his latest titled Wings of Dread which also features veteran Hong Kong action star Ashton Chen (Ip Man 2, Blade of Fury) along for the adrenaline infused ride in the clouds. Air police officer Gu Chaoyang encounters a hijacking crisis on his flight back to China. With his extremely high professional ethics, he fights desperately to stop the hijacker, and a life-and-death struggle that takes place at an altitude of ten thousand meters begins. Ashton Chen (Fight Against Evil) not only headlines here but he also helms the film along with Qin Pengfei.
TRAILER TACTICAL REACTION: I’m not sure when I’ll be able to properly check this one out but from the trailer, Wings of Dread looks like an absolute banger mixing Hong Kong Kung Fu mayhem with Indonesian Silat for the desired results. Uwais has played a baddie before in Expendables 4 and Stuber, but this one might just be his best one yet in terms of playing unredeeming characters. Chen is also looking more than capable here, and the action looks to combine the claustrophobic aesthetic of CQB action design with the expected chaos of Hing Kong action choreography. Blending martial combat styles is always welcome and the fights look ample and worthy. We’ve seen action films take up residence on airplanes before so while nothing new, hopefully the stars and their commitment to the action will make this one stand out.
