The first teaser for the highly anticipated and ambitious HBOMAX/DCU series Lanterns was divisive to say the least. I always laugh when people make a complete judgment off of a one minute or less teaser and yes there was the obvious omission use of the color green, but it still drew my attention and i was intrigued. IPs that are drenched in fanboy nation will always feel the wrath of toxicity and negativity but there are some of us that still get excited when something hits.
The newest trailer for Lanterns, which just hit this morning, definitely builds upon the initial tease and we get a lot more of what to expect while at the same time formulating more questions as to where this is actually going. Buck up though fanboy nation, because this trailer features more of the color green so get excited!
Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.
The new series definitely showcases more blackest night than brightest day as Jordan and Stweart ride into a small town where something is not right. It has a western vibe that is without a doubt something new for the property and Chandler looks sensational as a grizzled, tired and extremely pissed off version of Hal Jordan. Pierre, who shined in Netflix’s Rebel Ridge. also looks spot on and the chemistry between the two look palatable. Kelly Macdonald as Kerry, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, and Jason Ritter as Billy Macon round out the cast.
TRAILER REACTION for this latest Lanterns tease certainly radiates the desired enthusiasm with more of the ring and more of the complex relationship of Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Mixing epic super hero/comic book theatrics with a more grounded and stripped down murder mystery is, I think, exactly what the doctor ordered and fans should be regressed to remember that the Green Lanterns comics did serve up a more earthly approach way back in the 70’s and 80’s so I think that we will get ample amounts of both grounded drama and bombastic galactic action. If anything, the chemistry between Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre looks palpable and electric so there is that to entice hardcore fans to still check this one out when it hits. As always, we shall see but dammit, watch the damn show before you decide to condemn it!
