You had me at Jason Statham playing action star Jason Statham! OK, I know I said“enough said” in the title, but this one is just too good to not elaborate on as Deadline is bringing the radest of rad news with John Wick co-creator and action maestro David Leitch set to direct Jason Statham as…Jason Statham! The title even has my attention as the film will be called…wait for it…JASON STATHAM STOLE MY BIKE! You’re welcome action cinema. This has the tendency to be meta-comic gold of the highest caliber. Scroll below for all the legit intel!
Per Deadline, Statham will star in the movie for Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train director Leitch, reuniting them after Universal’s box office hit Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Filming is being lined up for May 2026.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but we’re told it’ll see Statham “in the role of a lifetime, playing global action superstar Jason Statham“. We hear the budget is being set north of $80M — an increasingly rare proposition in the indie marketplace — and the project includes a number of major action set pieces. It’s being conceived as a PG-13 with tongue in cheek, per the movie’s meta title.
At first, many will balk at this, but true Statham fans should be all on board as this sounds deliciously awesome in every way imaginable. Seriously, The Stath is basically going to poke humor at himself and I’m sure there will be many meta gags to be had in regards to the type of roles he plays in his action films. Unfortunately, its’s of the PG-13 fair which I feel is a missed opportunity because you can go full on satire with some gratuitous R rated shenanigans but alas this still sounds like a most anticipated movie.
Reuniting serious onscreen action talent in Statham with serious onscreen turned offscreen action talent in David Leitch is a no brainer and the two should be able to bring it when it comes to the action design and here’s hoping the humor sticks the landing. The film is being shopped at this week’s EFM and Black Bear is already moving out with a wide domestic release in North America so bring it on.
Set to start filming this May, the film is said to boast a major production budget north of $80 million dollars. It is also being reported that there will be numerous larger than life action set pieces to coincide with the meta humor enveloping such an outlandish film. Alison Flierl (BoJack Horseman) penned the screenplay, and the plot details are classified as of now.
The only question left to ponder is, just who’s bike did Statham steal and why? Maybe the action star took it as he was chasing a villain. That’s my best guess and I’m sticking with it. Even better if it’s some poor kid’s bicycle which would certainly herald bigger laughs, but it’ll probably be of the horsepower variety. I’m sure he’ll give it back to the rightful owner even if its wrecked. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, while we all wait for more on this developing project, check out The Stath rolling up on his bike looking cooler than hell as he’s about to lay some smackdown on some fools from the first Expendables film!
