Trinity CineAsia dropped a massive bomb last week when it announced that it had acquired action legend Jackie Chan’s newest thriller The Shadow’s Edge and will release the film in theaters starting October 3rd. Subsequent trailers and behind the scenes footage released prior to this showcased Chan starring in a brutal and visceral action pic that looks heavy on the action design and savage with the blood all at the same time. Synopsis: Get ready for the latest film from the legendary Jackie Chan, as he takes on a notorious criminal gang, unlike anything he’s faced before.
When a cyber-criminal gang disappears with billions, evading capture by outsmarting the Police’s formidable “Sky Eye” surveillance system, they desperately enlist the help of a legend. Wong Tak-Chung (Jackie Chan), a retired tracking expert, mentors rookie officer He Qiuguo (Zhang Zifeng, Aftershock, Upcoming) and rebuilds an elite surveillance unit. Their mission: to track down the elusive “Wolf King,” Fu Longsheng (Leung Ka Fai Tony, Election, Cold War), the mastermind behind the heist. As the police close in, the thieves spring a trap of their own. Brains clash, loyalties are tested, and the ultimate cat-and-mouse game is about to begin…
From award-winning writer-director Larry Yang (Ride On, Mountain Cry), Jackie Chan and Leung Ka-Fai Tony reunite for the first time in twenty years, following their collaboration on The Myth. Now, the 71-year-old Chan plays a retired police officer, a role that continues his long-standing portrayal of law enforcement figures on screen. The Shadow’s Edge references elements of his Police Story character while offering a contemporary take on the “veteran cop” archetype.
Leung Ka-Fai Tony has dominated the screen throughout his varied career. Never repeating the same role twice, he was inspired to step back into portraying a villain in this updated, modernised take on Eye in the Sky. At 67, the four-time Hong Kong Film Awards’ Best Actor winner, who has largely focused on arthouse films, achieves a new breakthrough with this highly demanding role, showing both the psychology and physicality of this elite criminal.
K-Pop superstar Jun of the hit boyband SEVENTEEN will also play a villain in the film and will be the adoptive son of Leung’s character. Larry Yand directs with Zifeng Zhang and J_Black rounding out the main cast.
It does bode well that this latest UK trailer from Trinity CineAsia does feature a sweat inducing mix of shoot ‘em up infused with some pretty raw, savage and exhilarating martial arts action design with Chan delivering on all fronts. Age is just a number to this legend and it’s always welcoming to see him deploy his signature and sick skills he’s honed through decades of training and film work. This is a definite must see for any hardcore action cinephile who likes their chaos served with a dash of the jaw dropping stuff.
