It’s a wonder why it took so long for there to be a live action adaptation of the blockbuster Call of Duty video game franchise, but fans can now rejoice as Paramount has officially announced that a film is indeed in development. The news comes on the heels of the company striking a lucrative deal with Activision who is responsible for the kinetic first-person war shooter.
Call of Duty games gave spawned the decades delivering tier one action and gaming experiences channeling everything from WWII to Vietnam to current conflicts as well as futuristic scenarios. The game has been thrilling players for over 20years now and with the new deal, Paramount is now eyeing to bring the bullet drenched mythos of the games to the big screen in a cinematic event designed to thrill audiences.
According to THR, “Paramount CEO David Ellison calls a “dream come true,” the Call of Duty video game franchise will become a big screen movie franchise, thanks to a major deal between the entertainment studio and Activision.” The source also added, “Activision and Paramount have inked a deal that will see the studio develop, produce and distribute a live-action film based on the game franchise, “designed to thrill its massive global fan base by delivering on the hallmarks of what fans love about the iconic series, while boldly expanding the franchise to entirely new audiences.”

I’m not much of a gamer, but I have deployed every now and then with the game as I love action and war related cinema and TV and always thought that the games looked better than most of what we got in live action. The Call of Duty games are a visceral and immersive experience thrusting gamers in endless battles and firefights with numerous enemies and this is one gaming property that should excel in a big budget movie with some serious star power to cover its six.
“As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty this is truly a dream come true,” Ellison said in a statement. “From the first Allied campaigns in the original Call of Duty, through Modern Warfare and Black Ops, I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love. Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.”

Paramount essentially is also riding on the coattails of the enormous success of the legacy sequel Top Gun: Maverick which saw Tom Cruise returning as ace fighter pilot Pete Mitchell. The franchise is looking to return for a third film, and it is said that Paramount is looking to put that one on the fast track.
“Throughout its history, Call of Duty has captured our imagination with incredible action and intense stories that have brought millions of people together from around the world, and that focus on making incredible Call of Duty games remains unwavering,” Activision president Rob Kostich added. “With Paramount, we have found a fantastic partner who we will work with to take that visceral, breathtaking action to the big screen in a defining cinematic moment. The film will honor and expand upon what has made this franchise great in the first place, and we cannot wait to get started. Our shared goal is quite simple — to create an unforgettable blockbuster movie experience that our community loves, and one that also excites and inspires new fans of the franchise.”
It’s important to note that all of this is in the early stages so it will be a long while before we see this deal pay dividends. At least we now know that a kick ass live action version of the video game is on the way so hopefully they will plug in the right people in front of and behind the cameras.
