Needless to say, actor and filmmaker Dev Patel hit a blood drenched home run with Monkey Man which was his directorial debut. The film was a bit convoluted, downright depressing and hard to swallow at times but there is no denying that the film was a sublime mixture of deep human drama and bone crunching and ferocious action. Not bad for a first time effort.
Now Patel is back and he’s centering the ring for a second go around with the equally brutal sounding period actioner The Peasant which the star also penned the script and devised the story with Will Dunn who lent a hand to Ms. Marvel. The plot details are as follows. “In the 14th Century, a lone shepherd rages against a company of mercenary knights after they ransack his peaceful peasant community, proving that he is more than he seems.” Sounds like another lighthearted comedy to me but I could be wrong.
New reports coming out of Deadline says that A24 has just acquired The Peasant for worldwide distribution in a deal ranging around $30 million. A24 has been looking to delve into more action-oriented fair and recently released the visceral and immersive military film Warfare.
It helps that The Peasant is being described as a rousing and eclectic blend of Braveheart and John Wick with a dash of King Arthur thrown in for that tasty result. Patel has dabbled in the Arthurian legend before with his well-received The Green Knight so this upcoming film will be right in his wheelhouse.
