Upon its initial release on Netflix all the way back in 2020, Charlize Theron’s immortal action-fantasy epic The Old Guard was met with the usual mixed reviews, but it did stream for success and was granted a follow up to further enhance the legacy of the franchise. Unfortunately, fires and regime changes plagued the sequel which was actually shot a few years ago but now The Old Guard 2 will see the light of day this July and there is now a brand-new trailer to accompany key art that debuted yesterday.
Oscar winner Charlize Theron is back in her role as the immortal warrior Andromache of Scythia and this time; she’s taking on Kill Bill’s Uma Thurman who rises as a new and old threat who just might be the world’s oldest living immortal. Thurman looks to be channeling a more savage and evil version of her iconic character of The Bride from Tarantino’s classic films which is most inviting.
The new trailer gives fans a brief glimpse of the carnage to come including the action set pieces and a rousing confrontation between Theron and Thurman which includes a Highlander style showdown for the ages with swords and axes!
Andy (Charlize Theron) and her team of immortal warriors are back, with a renewed sense of purpose in their mission to protect the world. With Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) still in exile after his betrayal, and Quynh (Veronica Ngô) out for revenge after escaping her underwater prison, Andy grapples with her newfound mortality as a mysterious threat emerges that could jeopardize everything she’s worked towards for thousands of years. Andy, Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli) and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) enlist the help of Tuah (Henry Golding), an old friend who may provide the key to unlocking the mystery behind immortal existence. Directed by Victoria Mahoney, and also starring Uma Thurman, The Old Guard 2 is an emotional, adrenaline-pumping sequel, based on the world created by Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernandez.
The fresh teaser dazzles with imagery, adrenaline pumping action and Theron’s triumphant and long delayed return as Andy, who must strap on her weapons of war once again to take on the looming threat of Kill Bill star Uma Thurman. Thurman’s nefarious character has been biding her time while surveying Andy and her elite team of operatives while they have transcended time and space. Disappointed with Andy and her team’s involvement with helping out humanity which has taken a toll of their own kind.
The Old Guard 2 was helmed by Victoria Mahoney from a screenplay penned by Greg Rucka and Sarah L. Walker, based off of Rucka and artist Leandro Fernandez’s comic book which has the same name. The cast also includes returning members KiKi Layne as Nile, Marwan Kenzari as Joe, Luca Marinelli as Nicky, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Copley, Veronica Ngo as Quynh, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker with Henry Golding joining the franchise as Tuah.
