I’m not sure whether to be elated or kind of sad as we have official confirmation that action icon Jason Statham will indeed return for The Beekeeper 2. Normally we would all raise our hands up and high five the person nearest to us but alas the first film’s director David Ayer is not returning as well. Fear not true believers. Even though that is disconcerting news, if Ayer isn’t coming back, who better than The Shadow Strays and The Night Comes for Us helmer Timo Tjahjanto take over! I thought that woulkd perk you up a little.
Deadline, yes them, brought the news today and cameras are said ready to roll this fall. We all know the plot of the first one which involved The Statha playing a retired bad ass former operative who comes out of retirement to kill everyone and anyone responsible for the death of his kind hearted neighbor and landlady played by Phylicia Rashad who commits suicide over falling for a phishing scam that too millions from her and her charity. What culminates is roughly 90 plus minutes of Statham showing us why The Beekeeper unit is feared ad he carves his way through an army to get justice.
It is said that the Amazon MGM, who will most likely handle domestic distribution again, are looking to bring Ayer back in a producing capacity. Hey, I’ll take what I can get. Ayer is currently shooting the thriller The Heart of the Beast which stars one Brad Pitt, so it sounds like Amazon MGM want to get the ball rolling on The Beekeeper 2 as fast as possible and unfortunately, Ayer’s plate is full right now to direct.
Tjahjanto is fast becoming the go to guy for hyper fierce action movies after directing a slew of insane Indonesian actioners including Netflix’s The Shadow Strays, The Night Comes for Us, and The Big Four. Tjahianto is a no holds barred filmmaker who creates unflinching and ultra-violent action pics, and his success won him the job of directing Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody 2 which hits this summer. Basically, if you can’t get Ayer to return, hire this guy because the action was off the charts in the first film so imagine what Tjahianto will do for the follow up. Statham on overload is what fans can expect. Yes please.
In the meantime, Statham and Ayer’s next collaboration A Working Man hits theaters on March 28th and his Mutiny hits cinemas next year on January 6th. Lock N Load Statham fans!!!
