Omar Sy has been crushing it as of late in action cinema after delivering a solid performance in John Woo’s The Killer remake which his Peacock last year. The versatile actor is tacking up again for a new series which will expand the Extraction universe which is the series of films starring Chris Hemsworth. Netflix had been teasing expanding the universes of some of their popular IPs and now they are making good on it with a new show that will hopefully capture the adrenaline magic of the movies that feature Hemsworth as black ops mercenary Tyler Rake.
According to Deadline, Sy will headline the Extraction series which will be “set in the high-octane world of Extraction. The yet-untitled action thriller series follows a mercenary (Sy) as he navigates a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, the series delves into the emotional struggles of conflicted and flawed characters, each facing trauma, betrayal and life-or-death choices.“
Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) is serving as the executive producer and showrunner for the new series which will encompass eight-episodes. The show will be executive produced by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo’s AGBO, which produced the two movies with Hemsworth.
“Audiences are in for a thrill as we delve deeper into the Extraction universe,” Peter Friedlander, VP Scripted Series at Netflix stated. “With Omar Sy leading the charge, our collaboration with the Russos, alongside Glen Mazzara, fans can expect even more of the high-octane adventures they love from the Extraction franchise.”
It is important to note that Hemsworth is still expected to headline a third entry in the popular franchise of movies and Idris Elba was even teased in the second movie as a recurring character. The Extraction movies, and hopefully series, are a hyper-kinetic barrage of thunderous action sequences encompassing some of the most bad ass stunt work ever seen in action cinema. The creative action design of the set pieces along with Sam Hargrave’s direction have made the movies a favorite amongst fans so hopefully the expansion of the universe will go off with a bang.
