It’s my official birthday today, so I was hoping for a cool trailer to hit (or maybe 2) and this one is definitely a cool one. Nearly 3 decades after the first film 28 Days Later hit, filmmaker Danny Boyle and Civil War helmer Alex Garland are finally able to revisit the franchise as the third installment, titled 28 Years Later, is set to hit theaters next June. Today sees the release of the first teaser and it doesn’t disappoint as it shows off a world decimated by the virus that infected millions on the planet. Check out the horrors in store below!
28 Years Later features a stellar cast including Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Jack O’Connell (Ferrari), Erin Kellyman (Solo: A Star Wars Story), and Edvin Ryding (Young Royals). Cillian Murphy, who starred in the first film, is also set to reprise his role although looking from the initial teaser, he’s not doing too good and has finally been taken by the virus that he so desperately tried to evade. Boyle helms once again and he co-wrote the script with Graland.
The official plot is still up in the air although Fiennes did speak with IndieWire this past October, and he hinted at what to expect.
“Britain is 28 years into this terrible plague of infected people who are violent, rabid humans with a few pockets of uninfected communities. And it centers on a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. He leads his mother through this beautiful northern English terrain. But of course, around them hiding in forests and hills and woods are the infected. But he finds a doctor who is a man we might think is going to be weird and odd, but actually is a force for good.”
It’s also stated that 28 Years Later is the first in a planned three movie arc with Boyle looking to deepen his vision of a world in chaos. The next film was shot back-to-back with this one, but it sees Candyman and The Marvels’ Nia DaCosta directing this time so expect maybe a new tone or different interpretation to be had. There is no release date set for the second film but 28 Years Later is poised to hit on June 20th, 2025, via Sony Pictures.
