Let me first preface this article by saying that I was really sure that Denzel Washington’s last turn as Robert McCall in Equalizer 3, the ex-Marine and elite DIA officer who now helps those who are in trouble with his particular skill set, was his swan song for the blockbuster action franchise. After all, the movie had the perfect ending and a wrapped-up character arc that saw McCall happy to live out the rest of the days. I believe that Washington also mentioned that this third film would be it for him but in Hollywood, one never says, well, never.
The iconic stage and screen star is currently doing press for his turn in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 and during an interview with Esquire, the Oscar winning thespian dropped one massive piece of intel. Not only will he be doing a fourth Equalizer film but there will also be a fifth as well! Now, it’s important to note that money talks and The Equalizer films have all made bank at the box office so there’s that. I feel that the third film was a befitting end and also was the weakest in the series so hopefully these next two installments will be better.
“I told them I would do another Equalizer, and we’re doing four and five. More people are happy about that – people love those daggone Equalizers. But I’ve come to realize that the Equalizer films are for me, too, because they’re for the people. They want me to go get the bad guys. ‘We can’t get them, so you go get them.’ And I say, Okay, I’ll get them! Just wait right there. I’ll be right back!“
The movies are based on the original 80’s television series that starred Edward Woodward and there is also the hit CBS series that stars Quenn Latifah as a female jack of all trades who helps those who are in trouble. Washington’s movies are clearly the best and Washington is smooth, deadly and decisive in the role as he executes the action design to near perfection. He’s just plain bad ass and as slick as Shaft in the process.
Even with the third film being a step down, I’ll take as many Equalizer films as Washington will dish out as they are stacked with all of his charisma, gravitas and physical attributes with entertaining and crowd-pleasing adrenaline mixed with heartfelt and true human drama. Like he said, people love these films, and I am one of them so Mr. McCall, I say, welcome back!
