I must admit that there wasn’t a whole that I knew of the upcoming thriller Rebel Ridge besides the fact that John Boyega of the Star Wars franchise was at one time set to star in the film. He, of course, dropped out and was replaced by Aaron Pierre and from the looks of the new trailer, there’s a little First Blood influences in the film which is being described as a “high-velocity thriller that explores systemic American injustices through bone-breaking action sequences, suspense, and dark humor.” Well, I’m sold, so scroll below and see Pierre go to war with a delightfully corrupt small-town sheriff played by the iconic Don Johnson. Bullets will fly and people will…well, you get it.
Official Synopsis: Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre) enters the town of Shelby Springs on a simple but urgent mission– post bail for his cousin and save him from imminent danger. But when Terry’s life’s savings is unjustly seized by law-enforcement, he’s forced to go head to head with local police chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson) and his combat-ready officers. Terry finds an unlikely ally in court clerk Summer McBride (AnnaSophia Robb) and the two become ensnared in a deep-rooted conspiracy within the remote township. As the stakes turn deadly, Terry must call upon his mysterious background to break the department’s hold on the community, bring justice to his own family– and protect Summer in the process.
Hailing from director Jeremy Saulnier, best known for some pretty brutal and depressing fair like Green Room, Blue Ruin and Hold The Dark, Rebel Ridge wastes no time in gearing up and hitting the audiences with some heavy drama infused with the aforementioned high velocity action set pieces. I like it when a movie comes out of nowhere for me and I finally see a trailer to put it firmly on my radar and this one looks to stary from the mediocre pack that Netflix has been dishing out lately in action cinema.

The cast includes AnnaSophia Robb, David Denman, Emory Cohen, Steve Zissis, Zsané Jhé, Dana Lee, and James Cromwell. There’s a lot of layers going on here as the movie looks to shed light on corruption and immoral practices while at the same time serving us with some bone breaking action sequences so sign me up and let’s get this going.
I mentioned that this movie is vibing First Blood with the whole one man army taking on a corrupt sheriff and his men and that’s a good thing as Pierre is channeling a little John J. Rambo. Johnson is always a game changer and here he looks devious and power trippy leading up to the inevitable war on the streets of a small town. Color me intrigued.
