Hey, who remembers one of Netflix’s other cool action flicks not named Extraction that starred Charlize Theron as the leader of a bad ass group of mercenaries who happen to be immortal? I’m kidding of course as I’m sure you remember The Old Guard, but do you know what the hell is going on with the sequel that wrapped production back in 2022? Well. I’m glad you asked because it does exist, and Theron promised that the movie will hit Netflix soon and her lethal brigade of undying mercs will live to fight another die.
The road to The Old Guard 2 has been long and oh so bumpy with production suffering a fire on set at Rome, Italy’s historic Cinecittà Studios which forced production to shut down for a bit. Then during post-production there was a massive shakeup with the powers that be over at Netflix which has left the highly anticipated sequel in a state of flux and limbo.
In a recent interview with Variety, Theron talked about the delay with The Old Guard 2 and has promised that it is now back on course and will hit the streaming service in the near future.
“Netflix went through quite a changeover. We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it. They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up and I’m really excited about it. It’s really good. It’s a really important film to us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie,” Theron stated to Variety and she also mentioned that it will be released “soon.“

The Old Guard hails from the popular graphic novel series that was created by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard Netflix movie was penned by Rucka himself and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The hyper-kinetic actioner told the story of a “covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die who have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. When the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile, the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.”
Victoria Mahoney, who was the second unit director on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker helmed the sequel and Theron returns along with KiKi Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Luca Marinelli, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Veronica Ngo with new additions including Uma Thurman and Henry Golding. Rucka, once again, wrote the screenplay for the sequel and also serves as executive producer on the project.
Unfortunately, we know next to nothing in terms of plot but expect that to change with this intel that the sequel will be coming very soon. In the meantime, while we wait, check out one of the first film’s pulsating action sequences!
