What can save the Terminator franchise from…well…Armageddon? After several failed live action movies and even with Arnie’s participation in the last two, success has seemed to avoid the films that peaked with Terminator: Judgement Day. While that film is deemed one of the best, if not the best, action movie of all time, the subsequent films that have followed have crashed and burned massively. Spoiler Alert. I did like all the films for different reasons but alas, I love bad films so sue me.
Well, Netflix is giving it a go and this time we are getting a new Terminator ANIME series titled Terminator: Zero which features a stacked voice cast including Justified and The Mandalorian’s Timothy Olyphant who will be voicing the Terminator himself. Additional cast members include Daredevil’s Rosario Dawson as well as André Holland, Sonoya Mizuno, and Ann Dowd. The series will consist of 8 episodes, and it was created by the Japanese animation studio Production IG which is responsible for Ghost in the Shell. News has been out for quite some time about the new series, but I figured I would share it now seeing as we have new key art to show you. Scroll below for all the goodies that are self-aware!

2022: A future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines. 1997: The AI known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity,” reads the series’ synopsis. “Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in 1997 to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity. As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children.

As a fan of the franchise since the first film hit in 1984, maybe this is the kick in the ass that it needs or maybe it will just fall by the wayside like the latest movies. Only time will tell but I love the visuals that I’ve seen so far and think that moving the action to post-apocalyptic Japan is a nice touch. I do feel that a lot of Terminator fans are so jaded due to the recent output that they will switch off to just about anything anymore. We shall see…
A trailer is set to hit on July 5th as the series will launch on Netflix starting on August 29th!
