Paramount+ loves what they see from Taylor Sheridan as the television and film creator has reign supreme over at the streaming service with his Yellowstone spin-offs and Tulsa King with Sly. Sheridan is literally the golden boy as anything he touches turns to hit gold and now his latest venture Lioness with Zoe Saldana has been given an official 2nd season order.
Formally known as Special Ops: Lioness, the series features Saldana (The MCU) as the head of an elite special operations warfare group that embeds covert operatives into terrorist cells in hopes of decimating said cells from within. The first season also starred Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton and Hannah Love Lanier, Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton and Hannah Love Lanier as well as Hollywood heavyweights Nicole Kidman and Morgan Freeman. Laysla De Oliveira also starred as the group’s new recruit who goes undercover with the fiancé of a suspected terrorist.

Lioness proved a ratings juggernaut as it broke a new record for the platform as the most watched series premiere on the day it launched garnering roughly 6 million total viewers in its first week alone across Paramount+ worldwide. Lioness was also a hit as well on the Paramount Network.
I recently finished the first season and while I did enjoy it as I’m a fan of all things military action, I felt it was a mixed bag. I loved the dynamic of the spec ops group and Saldana and ger crew had excellent chemistry together, but I felt the show ventured off into soap opera land when De Oliveira was on with her mission. Short story, I would have loved to see Saldana and her team more and more action sequences would have been nice as well. There are brutal and unflinching action beats peppered throughout with a satisfying conclusion, but I would have just loved to see more of that and less of the daytime drama dramatics. Hopefully season 2 will fix those issues but I’m still a fan and am excited to see it continue. Kidman was also solid in her supporting role and brought some serious gravitas to the proceedings. Wagner, who I have loved for years in series like Blade and movies, was spot on as Saldana’s next in command.
Regardless of my negative issues with the series, I was hooked from the get-go and Sheridan knows how to balance quality action set pieces with rousing and real-world storytelling. Lioness is another example that Sheridan knows how to suck in an audience and not let go until the final episode.
“Our Paramount+ audience resoundingly has joined forces in support of Lioness’ gripping, global story and the powerhouse performances from Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira and Nicole Kidman. We cannot wait to see more of the heart-stopping suspense and action that Taylor Sheridan and the incredibly talented team deliver in its second season,” Jeff Grossman, the Executive Vice President of Programming at Paramount+ stated in the renewal article.
Chris McCarthy, from the Office of the CEO of Paramount Global and President & CEO, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios added “Lioness captivated audiences around the world as one of the most-watched global series premieres on Paramount+ last year. Driven by Taylor Sheridan’s masterful storytelling and Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldaña’s remarkable performances, season two promises to immerse audiences in yet another riveting, adrenaline-fueled journey.”
