Lionsgate definitely knows a good thing when they have it and after delivering a billion-dollar franchise to them with John Wick, the movie company has given Chad Stahelski the keys to the city when it comes to making original action movies. Stahelski has just inked an exclusive first look deal with Lionsgate to produce original content for years to come. this comes after Stahelski was named the creative overseer of the Highlander and John Wick franchises including film, television and other platforms. Stahelski is probably the best-known filmmaker in the genre who comes from a stuntman background, and he certainly knows how to translate action adrenaline on the big screen and give the genre the respect it deserves. Gosh, it seems like just yesterday I was watching Stahelski take on Daniel Bernhardt in Bloodsport 2. Where has the time gone?
Stahelski’s next high-profile gig is the long gestating Highlander reboot which will see him team up with Henry Cavill to bring a new vision of the iconic immortal to the big screen. Stahelski is also currently reworking the John Wick universe film Ballerina and tweaking it with better action sequences working alongside that film’s director Len Wiseman. That movie has been delayed until June of next years as a result.

In the announcement from Lionsgate, Adam Fogelson, chairman of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group stated, “Chad and his team at 8711 Entertainment are profoundly talented filmmakers and creative collaborators. They raise the bar of excellence on every project they take on, and we are looking to Chad to bring us the best new original action projects that we can work on together and turn into the next hits and franchises.”
Stahelski was also quoted in the article relaying his excitement.
“Lionsgate has been my home studio throughout my career as a feature director, so it only makes sense that I would base our film production business with the team that has been such extraordinary partners for so many years.”
There is one thing for sure, Stahelski and his 87Eleven Entertainment is the ones to beat when it comes to making hyper-kinetic, full throttle action epics. They are certainly duplicated quite often so you know they’re doing something right. It will be interesting to see what Stahelski and Cavill bring to the world of Highlander and while action fans aren’t normally excited about reboots, with Chad at the helm, it’s all systems go.
