Well, normally I don’t do posts when someone beloved in the genre passes away because I don’t handle sadness well but it’s with deep solace that it’s been reported that action and Hollywood icon, and now legend, Carl Weathers has passed away at the age of 76. Best known for playing the unforgettable Apollo Creed in the Rocky films as well as other roles in the cult classic Action Jackson and the classic Predator where he shared the screen with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Weathers was a force to be reckoned with each and every time he graced the screen.
Weathers was special as he was one of the few that just oozed charisma, charm and power in each role he did. Weathers most recently was Greef Karga in the hit Star Wars Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Even in his 70’s, Weathers still looked as deadly as ever and he will definitely be missed in the realm of action and fantasty.
I was such a fan of his that I even rank his role in the TNT original movies Assault on Devil’s Island and Assault on Death Mountain (AKA the Shadow Warriors films), in which he starred with wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, high on my list. Even though they were made for TV, they were two hyper-charged and action fueled flicks that satisfied my military action rush. Not to mention the two seasons he did on Street Justice where he teamed up with 90’s action star Bryan Genesse. I have both seasons on DVD and watch them to this day. That show was quintessential 90’s DTV style action like no other and it definitely needed more than just two seasons.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” his family said in a statement. “He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. … Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”
This one hurts and it comes a day after we remembered the late, great Brandon Lee on what would have been his birthday. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and legions of fans.
