OK, you have my intention with this one. Nothing says beatdown and brutal like a man wearing a monkey mask as he is pummeled by superior fighters in an underground fighting ring. Then new action film is titled Monkey Man, and it hails from actor and filmmaker Dev Patel and producer Jordan Peele (known for original style horror) who stars in and directs. Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Dev Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.
Infusing elements of such classic action films like Fight Club and John Wick, Monkey Man is certainly aiming to hit viewers over the head with some severe blunt force trauma. The trailer is loaded with gratuitous violence and ample scenes of throwdowns that strip it down to its primal goods and action sequences that look to give Mr. Wick a run for his money. Coming from Patel, who isn’t known for this type of extreme movie, it makes it all the more intriguing and Patel might have action star to put on his resume in the future. This is Bollywood action without all the dance number filler. Just massive amounts a vengeance laved violence. I’m so in.
