Here’s a film project I can sink my teeth into! Oh…pardon the pun but I thought it was clever. Wrymwood helmer Kiah Roache-Turner is set to direct a new movie that just so happens to combine two of my favorite kinds of action movies. Shark thrillers and war pics!
The new movie has the rad title of Beast of War and it’s being described as “survival action thriller” where WWII soldiers must band together to survive not only attacks from the Japanese but also a fierce great white shark hunting them from the cold depths of the ocean. I’m intrigued. The full synopsis is below courtesy of Deadline along with teaser key art that looks appealing.
1942. A warship carries hundreds of Australian soldiers across the Timor Sea to the frontline of WW2. Suddenly, Japanese fighter planes scream out of the sky, and within minutes the ocean becomes a hell of steel, fire, oil, and blood. With the vessel destroyed, a handful of soldiers build a makeshift raft from floating debris as they cling to their lives. Tensions run high between the hot-headed and terrified young men, as they band together in an effort to survive. But their biggest battle is yet to come. In the dark below, a great white shark hunts in the wreckage and is drawn to the smell of fresh blood in the water.
Cornerstone, the production company behind the thriller, is readying to launch distribution sales at this year’s American Film Market or AFM for short.
The movie will go before the cameras in 2024 with location shooting in Australia and Malta. What’s really cool and a great selling point for genre fans like myself s that CreatureNFX’s director, Paul Trefry (Alien: Covenant, Unbroken), is going to be in charge of doing practical creature effects from his workshop in Australia. You know what practical effects are right? It’s what they did in the 80’s and 90’s before CGI took over so I’m expecting a tremendous throwback vibe to this one.
Trefry has had the honor of signing with such prestigious filmmakers like James Cameron, Ridley Scott, and Baz Luhrmann. Not too shabby.
