The Magnificent Seven and Seven Samurai meets Star Wars. Intergalactic action set pieces of a whole new level. Genre filmmaker Zack Snyder is back and his biggest Netflix collaboration to date has him taking on a rather robust space opera that will undoubtedly raise the bar for mixing genres together into one epic, crowd pleasing event.
Titled Rebel Moon, the Netflix film, which will now be showcased as two separate movies plus multiple cuts for adults and family, sees a group of renegades break into action to save the galaxy from an armada of evil. One woman will unite then all and the galaxy is about to erupt into all-out war!
Netflix has unveiled brand new images showing off the cast, spectacular sets and even some of the extreme action that is in store for fanboys and girls everywhere. Check them out in the gallery below!
Snyder might not be going the DCU but this universe looks rad and will definitely fill the void for his legions of fans. Plus it’s an original concept that takes its cues from some of the best genre films ever made,
The official synopsis for Rebel Moon:
Rebel Moon is a Seven Samurai—inspired space epic about a distant galactic colony that comes under threat from the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate to survive, they send a young woman (Sofia Boutella) on a mission to find allies that may be able to turn the tide. The film stars a murderer’s row of talent alongside Boutella, including Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Cary Elwes, Alfonso Herrera, Jena Malone, and Sir Anthony Hopkins as (of course) the voice of sentient battle robot Jimmy. Snyder directs and produces alongside Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller. He co-wrote the script with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten (Day Shift, Army of the Dead).
Snyder discussed the epic project in a recent interview with Vanity Fair and he discussed how splitting the film into two made since as two hour films fair better than three hours or more. He also stated that there will be a family friendly version that anyone can watch while the original cut will be aimed at adults.
Rebel Moon has been a passion project for Snyder for years and it is sad that he won’t get to complete his DCEU masterpiece but this one is way up top on my to watch list. All I know is, this is the sci-fi flick that should have the tag line, “it’s high noon at the edge of the universe.”
Rebel Moon looks to capture the serials of old and is loaded with incredible action and set pieces that include extreme fisticuffs, laser battles and space dog fights. I’m sold.
