Take this article with a grain of salt thus far and if need be, I’ll change it if it indeed be ya reality. The Wrap is saying that Dredd, Star Trek and The Boys Star Karl Urban is in final negotiations to play the coveted role of Hollywood martial arts star turned defender of the earth realm Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. Like I said, no official confirmation yet but it is intriguing, hence why I’m posting this. Producer Todd Garner did share The Wrap article on Twitter so either that’s confirmation or him having some fun. We shall see…Check out Garner’s Tweet below!
The favourite character amongst loyal fans is best known as an action movie star and martial artist who made his first appearance in the original Mortal Kombat game released in way, way back in 1992. Johnny Cage didn’t appear in the first Mortal Kombat movie much to the dismay of fans, but there was a post-credit scene teased that he would be in the follow up.
Mortal Kombat 2 will once again be helmed by Simon McQuoid, with Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight) penning the script. The sequel is expected to roll in front of cameras this June in Australia.
The first Mortal Kombat film’s reception was mixed to say the least and there have been many a story that those working behind the camera know that there’s a lot of room for improvement as loyal fans have been very vocal. Slater has gone on the record saying that they are looking at the Mortal Kombat sequel as “the chance to take everything that worked in the first one and do it even better and give the audience even more, and make something that is just incredibly satisfying, and really exciting, and unpredictable.” Slater also said that he wants to write a Mortal Kombat sequel that will come out of nowhere and essentially “ blow everyone away.“
Everyone has had their personal opinions as to who should play Johnny with actors ranging from Scott Adkins to JCVD to Mike “The Miz” Mizanin. The latter was my own choice and I wrote a whole piece on how he had the look, the moves and the attitude to pull it off in spades. But hey, what do I know? Urban is awesome but I never saw him at all as a Johnny Cage. This is when The Miz campaigned for the role and I thought he was dead on. Once again…what do I know?
Linden Ashby played Johnny in the original Mortal Kombat film but the character was recast and criminally misused in the sequel as he was killed off in the very beginning.
The original movie was released last year simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max and opened number one at the box office while ranking at the top of HBO Max’s most watched list which was truly a marvelous showing.
It is expected that the first film’s stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han and Tadanobu Asano are all set to return for the next adventure.
