(Original Post) Tell you the truth, I pretty much had forgotten about this one as it seems like an eternity since I first reported on it. Well, I apologize as it’s being reported that the John Wick spin-off Ballerina which was teased in the last entry is set to begin principle photography this month and start today as a matter of fact. The movie will film on location in Prague as well as other cities in and around the Czech capital and in the Czech Republic. Filming is expected to last the next three months and roll until February 5th.
The movie stars No Time to Die star Ana de Armis who has become rather the hot commodity in Hollywood as of late. The movie has been kicking around since 2017, that’s right pre-COVID, when John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum scribe Shay Hatten sold the spec to Lionsgate. The movie wasn’t intentionally a spin-off at first but Lionsgate saw promise and tweaked the storyline so it would share the universe of Baba Yaga. The plot centers around “a young woman raised as an assassin who must hunt down the other assassins that murdered her family” (per THR).
Len Wiseman of Live Free or Die Hard fame as well as the Underworld franchise has been tapped to helm the project so it is in good hands from an action genre standpoint. With the upcoming event series The Continental, Lionsgate is really amping up on expanding the elusive assassin filled world of John Wick.
Fans were divisive when it came to the last James Bond film but there was denying that de Armas proved that she had what it took when it came to pulling off demanding action roles. It’ll be interesting to see what she does with this film as she is the center of it.
In an interesting side note, franchise star Keanu Reeves was spotted in Prague which leads us to beloved that Wick will be involved in the spin-off. Just how much remains to be seen. Check out the Instagram post below!
