After basically 15 plus years in developmental hell and several directors and actresses attached to the project throughout, we finally have our first look at the new warrior as production is finally moving along on Red Sonja. Star Matilda Lutz, who was sensational in the thriller Revenge, is now Red Sonja and the studio has served up a first look image of her in films on Red Sonja mode. Check it out directly below!

The reboot has seen itself go through several stages throughout the years with such noteworthy directors such as Robert Rodriguez, Simon West, Bryan Singer, and Joey Soloway attached to helm at one time. Hannah John-Kamen, Rose McGowan, and Amber Heard were also mentioned as actors who were going to play the role with McGowan being the one attached to it the longest before it fell through.

M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane, Rogue) is now the director who is in charge and the screenplay was penned by the duo of Joey Soloway (Transparent) and Tasha Huo (Netflix’s Tomb Raider anime).

The plot is being kept under wraps right now but we do know that this version will derive from sword and sorcery inspired comic books put out by Dynamite Entertainment. Red Sonja was created by Robert E. Howard and Roy Thomas adapted the character for that comic book run.

Reports have clarified that Red Sonja will be “a fearsome warrior boasting a high degree of skill with a sword”, and that a main character in the movie will be Tr’aal, who is “a gladiator-type warrior who joins Sonja in her fight against an evil emperor”.

Additional cast members include Oliver Trevena (The Rising Hawk) who will be playing the part of Tr’aal and he is joined by Wallis Day (Sex/Life) as Annisia, Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy) as Draygan, MMA champion Michael Bisping (xXx: Return of Xander Cage) as Hawk, Martyn Ford (F9: The Fast Saga) as General Karlak, Eliza Matengu (Thor: Love and Thunder) as Amarak, Manal El Feitury (Code Red) as Ayala, and Katrina Durden (Doctor Strange) as Saevus. Quite the international cast if you ask me so that bodes well for this long and highly anticipated film.

We all know that happened with the Conan reboot that starred Jason Momoa taking over for Arnold who starred in the first two. That film fumbled the ball immensely and even Momoa has recently gone on record as saying the movie is terrible. Let’s hope that the same fate doesn’t inflict Red Sonja as we are in dire need of a decent sword and sorcery flick as they are hard to clear r by these days. The 80’s were a great time that saw many kick ass films like this come out including Arnold’s two films as well as The Sword and the Sorcerer.

Lutz sure looks sensational in the new image so fingers crossed.
