The reboot to the 1985 cult classic Red Sonja which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger in full on Conan mode and Brigitte Nielsen in the lead time had been in developmental hell for years now. It looked like the project would never get off the ground but never say never as it is finally filming and has found it’s lead star.
According to the the net, Millennium Media has just announced that Red Sonja is now being directed by M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) and is starring Matilda Lutz (Revenge) in the title role. Basset boarded the film five months ago when director Joey Soloway (Transparent) and star Hannah John-Kamen exited the project. It’s being reported that Bassett is still working on the script as well and it will stem from sword and sorcery comic books which hailed from Dynamite Entertainment. The character of Red Sonja was originally created by Robert E. Howard and was adapted by Roy Thomas.
Lutz stars along with an international cast that features Wallis Day (Sex/Life) as Annisia, Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy) as Draygan, Michael Bisping (Triple Threat) as Hawk, Martyn Ford (F9: The Fast Saga) as General Karlak, Eliza Matengu (Thor: Love and Thunder) as Amarak, Manal El Feitury (Code Red) as Ayala, and Katrina Durden (Doctor Strange) as Saevus.
While speaking to the press, Bassett made the following statement about directing the film:
It has been well documented that Red Sonja has gone through multiple directors throughout the years including such prestige names as Robert Rodriguez, Simon West, and Bryan Singer. Rose McGowan was attached for a long time and even Amber Heard was up for the role too.
The original film was a box office flop but has since gone on to become a beloved cult classic amongst genre fans. It was a nice sight to see Arnie doing a Conan type role again seeing that he has never reviewed the role.
While we wait for more details, check out the original trailer for the movie when it was due for release.
