MORTAL KOMBAT: New Line Taps Director Simon McQuoid to Return for the Fatality Drenched Sequel

I’m not sure whether this is good news or bad news but it looks like Mortal Kombat helmer Simon McQuoid ha been enlisted to return to pilot the following up which was announced awhile back. I say this because many fans were not exactly pleased with the reboot and even though there was enough blood soaked fan service to go around, not actually having an actual tournament didn’t sit well with people.

The news comes yesterday as Variety made the announcement. The initial movie was McQuoid’s directorial debut and it looks like New Line saw something they liked in the first timer who has directed many music videos and such.

The first film, “focused on Cole Young (Lewis Tan), an original character to the franchise. A washed-up mixed martial arts fighter, Young who is suddenly hunted by the assassin Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) and ends up dragged into the world of “Mortal Kombat,” a series of tournaments between champions of the Earthrealm and the chaotic Outworld. The film did not feature an official Mortal Kombat tournament, but ended with a tease for one in the sequel. Aside from Sub-Zero, characters from the video games who were featured included Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Kano (Josh Lawson), Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (Max Huang), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Shang Tsung (Chin Han) and Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada).”

I for one did enjoy the first film as you know, I like bad films, but I thought the definitive highlight was Sanada and Taslim who will hopefully be involved with the sequel. Then there’s Johnny Cage, who didn’t show up but was teased at the end of the film. Who should play the iconic Hollywood bad boy? Well, opinions vary so we’ll just have to wait to see who gets the coveted role. I will be happy if they pick a martial artist who can act and not someone who will need to be doubled up.

McQuoid did show promise in my book and hopefully they’ll listen to the complaints and fix what wasn’t right with the first film.

Keep it locked and loaded for more righteous details to follow as we are your destination for everything action in 2022 and beyond!

In the meantime, check out the fatalities in the original trailer!
