I think we are all in agreement when I say that it was a massive blow when Lionsgate announced that John Wick 4 was going to be delayed until March of 2023. After all, the film was supposed to drop this month and continue the streak of opening in time for my anniversary. Now my wife and I must do something else this year and to make matters worse, it’s not even coming out in May next year. Bullocks as they say. Nothing will ever beat the time when Chapter 3 released on our actual anniversary day and my wife and I saw it in IMAX in Panama City. It’s was an action drenched religious experience to put it simply.
Anyway, my rant is officially over and with that we have some teases for you straight from director Chad Stahelski’s mouth who dropped some info bombs at last week’s CinemaCon in Vegas. Stahelski mentioned that there will be a very emotional conclusion to one of the franchise’s plot threads so even though there’s going to be a fifth film, it looks like something huge is going to happen in the fourth film. He did use the word closure.
Stahelski also mentioned on how Reeves’ Mr. Wick was going to employ some new and devastating skills if that’s at all possible.
“Keanu’s got some new skill sets, which is good. He’s got some new props, which are great. We were fortunate enough to land some very interesting stunt teams from all over the world. And each stunt team from the different countries, the Japanese stunt team, the French stunt team, the Bulgarian stunt team, they all have a little bit of flavor of motion, and I think that helps change the set pieces as well. When you get all these different experts and different martial arts, it forces us to adapt the choreography to show different things. It’s fun.”
From the above quote, maybe Wick will decimate some unfortunate thugs with a “fucking pen” instead of a pencil. I’m just speculating at this point. Maybe he’ll use some kitchen utensils. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Stahelski also spoke of the Expendables type cast that was mentioned way back and it looks like the newcomers will be important when it comes to the world of assassins.
“I think Chapter 4 is a good continuation of all three previous films, and it’s got a bit of a conclusion to it, which is great. We introduce a ton of new characters that have a lot to say about John Wick from his past and from, obviously, present. I think it’s brotherhood, it’s hope. It’s what the life would really be like as a bit of an existential crisis with John, and I think that’s the fun part of the movie.”
All I have to say on the matter of the action star additions in Scott Adkins, Donnie Yen, Marko Zaror and company is that they better all get their 15 minutes to shine when it comes to the adrenalized set pieces. I have mentioned in the past that Stahelski is usually good to all his stars so I think it’s safe to say that he’ll respect the talent that’s involved.
I’m terms of the title, Stahelski was a little more cryptic and it looks like previous reports of what it would be called have been greatly exaggerated.
“Right now, we’re going with chapter four, still the title. Work in progress. I think something’s kind of catchy. Chapter four, something.”
Alright, Chad we get it. You’re keeping everything close to the vest. Some footage was screened for the lucky attendees at the Con and word is that the action is worthy of a John Wick entry and then some.
In the meantime, the rest of us wait and wait and wait some more. Somebody tell Mr. Stahelski that my wife is pissed that our anniversary ritual has been crushed like one of Wick’s classic cars. At any rate, we’ll be there opening weekend next year when the film hits.
Keep it locked and loaded right here for more info to come as we are your destination for everything action in 2022 and beyond. Tick, Tock Mr. Wick….
John Wick Chapter 4 will unleash its signature brand of carnage in theaters on March 24, 2023.
