STREETS OF RAGE: The Sega-Genesis Fight Game is Hitting the Big Screen from JOHN WICK Scribe Derek Kolstad

Evidently, the Sonic the Hedgehog live action video game adaptations are a big hit for Paramount Pictures and Sega. I’ve only seen the first one with my kids and let me tell you, one was more than enough for me.

Well, it looks like Paramount is diving into the Sega well once again as Deadline is reporting that the film company along with dj2 Entertainment & Escape Artists are dusting off another old school arcade fave in the form of the fisticuffs fueled Streets of Rage. Sweetening this deal is the fact that John Wick franchise creator and writer Derek Kolstad is penning the script as well.

Per Deadline: Streets of Rage, developed and published by SEGA, first launched in 1991 via the Genesis home video game console. The side-scroller follows former police offers who battle a crime syndicate. Since the debut game, the Streets of Ragefranchise has spawned sequels across numerous gaming platforms including the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The franchise’s latest title, Streets of Rage 4, was released in April 2020 and has sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide.

Streets of Rage fed off the success of Street Fighter and other side scrolling fight games and told the story of two former cops turned ass kicking vigilantes. Our weaponized duo of fury sets out to clean up a large city when a ruthless crime syndicate takes over. Fists and feet fly at 16 bits.

There is no casting developments yet but I’m curious to see who they get and how the tone of the overall film will be. Hopefully they get fighters who can act and cater to a more adult audience but I’m banking on a PG-13 rating in this one.
