We all know that a new Alien TV series is in development at FX but fans should be happy to hear that a new standalone movie is also currently in the works for Hulu.
Coming out of a report at THR, director Fede Alvarez (the Evil Dead remake) has been tapped to helm the new film from a pitch that he made to Ridley Scott years ago. Remembering the sales pitch and obviously liking it, Scott contacted Alvarez last year and asked him if he was still interested in doing it.
20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell was quoted as saying that they picked up the project “purely off the strength of Fede’s pitch” and also elaborated that its “just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.“
Scott will produce the new Alien movie via his Scott Free banner.
Now it would probably go without saying that fans of the historic franchise will turn their noses up at the fact that this new entry will see its home at Hulu instead of the big screen but Asbell wants to put people’s minds at ease and stress that this is the best thing for the project moving forward and that the movie won’t tone down any violence and adult subject matter to appease mainstream movie going audiences.
“It’s not a film that has to be all things to all people with those gargantuan budgets. They get to be authentically what they are. And this is closer to its genre roots,” Asbell stated.
I personally was disappointed that the powers that be didn’t give District 9 helmer Neill Blomkamp his shot after he pitched an idea for a new Aliens movie that would have taken place after James Cameron’s classic sequel. That film would have seen Sigourney Weaver return as Ripley along with Michael Biehn’s Hicks and have the tone of the sophomore effort from Cameron. Blomkamp even designed artwork that showed off his vision that only enticed us even more.
Unfortunately the studio went with Scott’s Prometheus and Alien Covenant which were huge disappointments critically and financially and were what I feel a huge step back for the franchise. Oh, What could have been.
One can only hope that Alvarez’s ideas are better than Scott’s recent films and I’m holding out hope that it will have the tone of the second film. Only time will tell.
Keep it locked and loaded right here for more to come on Alien as we are your destination for everything action in 2022 and beyond!
