New Line Cinema Officially Announces a Sequel to MORTAL KOMBAT with MOON KNIGHT Scribe Attached to Write

By: John M Jerva

It was announced sometime ago that a last year’s hit reimagining of Mortal Kombat would get a sequel but it’s being officially reported today that New Line Cinema has officially green-lit a follow up. The movie based on the best selling fighting video fans opened at number one in theaters during the pandemic and simultaneously premiered on HBOMAX.

The reboot has since gone on to become one of the leading streaming titles on the platform so a sequel was expected. Helmed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan, the newest version told the story of a washed up MMA fighter played by Lewis Tan (Fistful of Vengeance) who is recruited to become one of several elite fighters chosen to save Earth and other realms from the evil forces of Outworld in combat.

Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano, Chin Han and Hiroyuki Sanada also rounded out the cast and Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater is set to write the script.

No official casting or crew news has been released yet although it is being said that Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Tadanobu Asano and Chin Han are expected to return.

It was teased at the end of the first film that fan favorite Johnny Cage would be on the way so it’ll be interesting to see who graces the coveted file this time around. Many choices have been mentioned including Scott Adkins and WWE superstar Mike “The Miz” Mizanin so we’ll see hopefully soon who does get the part.

Fans were divided with the first film when it hit last year although the general consensus was that it definitely served up the fan service with its characters and winks to the game. Many thought that the new character of Cole played by Lewis Tan was forgettable and a lot of folks cried foul because Johnny Cage wasn’t in it. Sanada and Taslim as Scorpion and Sub-Zero respectively were the crowd pleasing highlights of it. I was on board with it though and thought it was a bloody and bone crunching good time and you can read my official review here.
