Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen starred in one of the best received action-comedies this year as Riders of Justice was a brutal and darkly humored entry in the genre. The film was a sleeper hit and now it’s being reported that Lionsgate has acquired the rights to an English language remake that’ll supposedly score with North American audiences.
The original Riders of Justice “followed a recently-deployed soldier who returns home to care for his teenage daughter after his wife is killed in a tragic train accident. But when a team of statistics experts claim foul play, the soldier embarks on a revenge-fueled mission, along with this eclectic group, to find those responsible.”
“There are few films that balance the action, emotion, and dark humor that Anders did so successfully in Riders of Justice,” said Erin Westerman, Lionsgate’s president of production. “We’re confident that the movie will translate perfectly to English-language audiences as well.”
It’s been done before where American film studios remade foreign movies and it’s been hit or miss so it’ll be interesting to see if this one keeps the dark tone of the original.
Shawn Levy who brought us Free Guy with Ryan Reynolds will produce via 21 Laps along with Dan Levine and Dan Cohen. Anders Thomas Jensen, who helmed the original, has been brought over to write the script with Nikolaj Arcel. Both co-wrote the first film.
