ROAD HOUSE: MGM Targets Jake Gyllenhaal & Director Doug Liman for Potential Remake of the Patrick Swayze Classic Actioner

By: John M Jerva

We’ve got more reboot or remake news for you today. After spilling the 411 that the Chad Stahelski helmed Highlander film with Henry Cavill is poised to start filming next year, Deadline is now reporting that there is some new traction on the long delayed remake of the Patrick Swayze classic action film Road House.

If any movie should be left alone, it’s probably Road House as it’s one of the late, great Patrick Swayze’s best action films. The film just smelled of 80’s unapologetic action awesomeness and Swayze ruled as Dalton, the “cooler” who is hired to clean up a rowdy bar named The Double Deuce. The film had charisma oozing all over it from its cast including the ultra cool Sam Elliot and the fight choreography was brutal, unflinching and bad ass.

Well it looks like MGM is amping up the reboot or remake as we just don’t know what kind of movie it will be but sources say that they are trying to enlist Jake Gyllenhaal to star. Reports are also saying that they are looking to get Doug Liman to helm it as well.

It’s not known whether this new Road House will be a straight up remake of the original or a new take on the older property. It is also unclear if Gyllenhaal, should he do it, would play the same character of Dalton or somebody else all together.

As someone who saw the original film in theaters and has watched it countless times throughout the years on home video, this one might be a hard one to sell. I like Gyllenhaal very much but I don’t know if he could bring the same swagger to the role like Swayze did. Only time will tell.

It’ll be a long while before this project would even happen as Gyllenhaal is slated to do The Interpreter first from director Guy Ritchie. Director Doug Liman is also busy getting ready to shoot his Everest project. MGM is looking to make this one a high priority and are currently meeting with writers to tackle the previous draft of the movie.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see how this one plays out so keep it locked and loaded right here for more on this one as we are your destination for everything action!

In the meantime, check out Swayze in action from the original classic and see what made it so great!
