EXTRACTION 2: Chris Hemsworth Promises a “Bigger & Badder” Sequel!

By: John M Jerva

It’s no secret that Extraction with Chris Hemsworth was one of the biggest hits for Netflix last year or any year for that matter. With the rousing success of the film, a sequel was almost immediately green lit and the only question was whether Hemsworth’s character of black market mercenary Tyler Rake was alive or not to warrant a proper follow up.

That question was answered with a drum rolling yes at the recent TUDUM global event as a teaser hit showing Rake come to in the water after he hit and the hashtag #RakeLives has been trending since.

With the original being such an action packed sequel, one has to wonder how the sequel will bypass the first but according to Rake himself, no worries.

While congratulating the elite stunt team of the movie for winning huge at the Taurus World Stunt Awards, Hemsworth teased a “bigger and badder sequel.” If that’s possible.

“Huge wins for @extractionfilm at the Taurus World Stunt Awards,” Hemsworth wrote on Instagram. “Massive thanks and congrats to the incredible stunt team for putting themselves on the line, making Extraction the massive success it continues to be. Shooting for the sequel begins soon and believe it or not it’ll be bigger and badder than the first. Stay tuned for more chaos!”

Joe Russo, who penned the original and is writing the follow up has teased a potential franchise for the Extraction property including sequels, prequels and spin-offs. All would be welcomed in my book if they’re anything like the inaugural movie.

Russo spoke with Collider on committing to the massive undertaking. “I’m still not gonna commit because I think it’s more exciting to surprise people,” Russo said, “but I will say this: we are working at building out a universe of films that could potentially explore some of the other characters from the first movie and some new characters, and see more historical interaction between the characters. So if you’re interested in David Harbour’s character, you just may get to see him in a future Extraction movie.“

I made Extraction my top film of 2020 and even though it was an anemic year for films because of the pandemic, I feel that it still would have been rated high if the 12 months were normal. I gave it a perfect score of 5 stars. Check out my thoughts as to why it was so special:

With our current situation these days, Extraction is a welcome addition to the action genre as it is locked and loaded with spectacular firefights, fisticuffs and exploding helicopters that fills its running time and Hemsworth is essentially the human form of the Energizer bunny who just keeps going and going and going. The film should give audiences a much needed break from reality and with the extreme action on hand, this movie is going to be hard to top from any other upcoming projects on the horizon. Netflix has really hit the target with this one and Hemsworth cemments his overall action hero status in a film that is doubled barrel guns blazing from start to finish. It’s an action extravaganza at its finest and one that will become a true genre classic in the years to come. A lot of times, I have high expectations for a film only to be let down but here Extraction fully realizes those expectations in one bruising display of an action flick. This film is without a doubt in my top five all time now and it is a true master class in how to execute action on film.

This is a sequel that I’m most excited for and with Hargrave returning in the director’s chair, I have good vibes on this one.

Check out the teaser which officially announced the survival of Tyler Rake below and keep it locked and loaded right here for more on Extraction as we are your destination for everything action!!!
