THE OLD GUARD: Charlize Theron’s Sequel is in the Works with Victoria Mahoney Set to Helm

Although I thought Netflix’s The Old Guard with Charlize Theron did overstay it’s welcome a tad, I still enjoyed the movie snd especially the action set pieces. Of course, the film ended without an ending as Netflix intends to franchise the property and it looks like it’s official as the sequel has tapped a changing of the guard (pardon the pun) with Victoria Mahoney now set to helm.

The news comes with the announcement that the main cast including Theron are set to return and Mahoney will be taking over for Gina Prince-Bythewood who had intentions of doing the follow up but ultimately dropped out for other endeavors. Prince-Blythewood will still be involved on the project with a producer credit.

“Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard,” Mahoney said. “I must’ve watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement–being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses. Ever eager to continue pushing the genre for action-loving audiences. Warmly tipping my hat to the world Gina, Charlize, Rucka, Fernández, Skydance, Netflix, Marc Evans Productions, Denver & Delilah Films and the entire Team daringly put forward.”

Mahoney is best known for directing episodes of several TV shows, like You and Lovecraft Country, but her biggest credit comes from being a second unit director on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Along with Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor have all opted to return as well and have finalized their contracts to appear in the sequel.

The original action epic which is based on a graphic novel starred Charlize Theron as immortal warrior Andromache of Scythia or “Andy” and she was born thousands of years ago and periodically dies in battle only to be resurrected to do it all over again. Now she leads a team just like her who prey on those who prey on the innocent but a new immortal and a CIA operative threatens to break up the mojo of the team.

Once again, creator Greg Rucka, who masterminded the graphic novel with Leandro Fernandez, is penning the script. Rucka made his theatrical writing debut with the original.
