July 23rd is still a little less than a month off but anticipation is steadily growing for the newest incarnation of the GI JOE franchise as it’s about to get a massive overhaul with Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins. I love that they’re starting with my favorite character of all time and I’m eagerly awaiting to see how it differs from previous incarnations.
Fans are split on this new take but for the most part, reaction has been positive and it helps that the footage released features some insane action set pieces with stars Henry Golding and Andrew Koji demonstrating their particular set of skills.
More key art has surfaced and this time, the whole cast is assembled and ready for action with the wait almost over. Check out the Arashakage Clan in full effect below!
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins stars Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, a tenacious loner who is welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir apparent. Upon arrival in Japan, the Arashikage teach Snake Eyes the ways of the ninja warrior while also providing something he’s been longing for: a home. But, when secrets from his past are revealed, Snake Eyes’ honor and allegiance will be tested – even if that means losing the trust of those closest to him. Based on the iconic G.I. Joe character, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins also stars Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow, Úrsula Corberó as The Baroness, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Haruka Abe as Akiko, Tahehiro Hira as Kenta and Iko Uwais as Hard Master.
Say what you will, but I think it looks like a summer action movie good time and regardless of how much the two stars get to actually wear their iconic masks, the fight choreography is looking sublime especially Koji who is channeling his best impression of the famed ninja Storm Shadow.
It’ll also be great to see martial arts sensation Iko Uwais on the big screen again and hopefully he gets utilized to the fullest.
The movie will also be making the rounds this July at ComicCon@Home which is the famed San Diego Comic Con. Lucky fans will be able to see the film first at special screenings.
