AMERICAN FIGHTER: Lionsgate’s Bruising Underground MMA Follow Up to AMERICAN WRESTLER Hits Hard in May!

By: John M Jerva

I recently purchased the inspirational action-drama American Wrestler from director Alex Ranarivelo from my local Dollar Tree and was pleasantly surprised by the film and its combination of drama and wrestling action. Starring George Kosturos as well as established character actor William Fitchtner, it was a cut above other types of films in the genre.

Now Kosturos returns along with Sean Patrick Flanery and Tommy Flanagan this time around in the MMA infused follow up titled American Fighter and this time the stakes and action are elevated to bone crunching levels. Due out in May, check out the key art, official images and bruising trailer below!

Desperate for cash to save his deathly ill mother, college wrestler Ali (George Kosturos, American Wrestler: The Wizard) enters the hidden world of underground fighting. Ali shows promise but, lacking skills, he gets beaten bloody. Duke (Sean Patrick Flanery The Boondock Saints), a troubled handler, takes pity on the boy and trains him to be a fierce competitor—but is it enough to make Ali a winner? Based on a true story, this gritty action tale also stars Tommy Flanagan (“Sons of Anarchy”).

George Kosturos (American Wrestler: The Wizard), Tommy Flanagan (“Sons of Anarchy”) and Sean Patrick Flanery (Born a Champion) star in the edge-of-your-seat sport thriller AMERICAN FIGHTER, available in select theaters and everywhere movies can be rented on May 21, and on Blu-ray and DVD May 25. In this action tale based on a true story, a young wrestler competes in the world of underground fighting to raise money for his ailing mother. But will he survive his next match?

I’m very excited to finally check out the sequel and the fight action looks down and dirty. This time Shaun Paul Piccinino takes over in the director’s chair and I love sequels that up the stakes of the protagonist and going from wrestling to full contact MMA fights is definitely a step up.

The movie debuted at Fantasia Film Fest a while back and saw a UK release via Signature so now it’s our turn to finally see the finished product. Sometimes it just takes longer for certain films to finally reach out shores but I’m fine with it as long as they do show up.

Hitting Digital and VOD on May 21st and Blu-Ray/DVD on the 25th, watch fighters collide in the new domestic trailer below!
